Social Justice

Social Justice Ministries

Many members and friends of First Universalist Church in Rockland are involved in social justice projects and organizations in the midcoast area. In 2019-20, our church began exploring justice issues around Indigenous people. During this current year, there will be several book discussions on racial justice issues. One member is spearheading weekly Black Lives Matter vigils in Rockland on Wednesdays at 12 noon. In the past, we have been the site for phone banking for Equality Maine, and have been a site for OUT Maine to show movies and have discussions regarding LBGTQ issues. We have been the incubator for new justice-related organizations - with members or staff starting these projects, and they grew: Window Dressers and Midcoast Community Chorus. Many groups use our building for meeting space. We are forming a Social Justice Team in 2020-21 with Pinny Beebe-Center taking the lead. If this is an area of interest for you, reach out to Pinny or our minister to see how you can get involved.

Many congregants also support Maine Unitarian Universalist State Advocacy Network (MUUSAN). We are currently searching for someone to represent our church at meetings.

Our church has been certified as a Green Sanctuary and Welcoming Congregation. Many congregants are passionate about climate justice and LBGTQ justice. These are ongoing commitments where we need folks to continue to organize education and action projects. If you are interested, contact the Director of Religious Exploration, dre@uurockland.org.
