“LOAVES & FISHES” SOUP KITCHEN

SUNDAY, AUG. 29TH, 11:30AM – 2PM

OUR CHURCH’S TURN to COOK and SERVE

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

We will be recruiting cooks and helpers all month; we need donors of meal components and also some to give cash ($5 or $10) to help cooks buy expensive protein ingredients.  We reheat, assemble and sometimes cook from scratch to serve 50 or more diners, many of whom are out of food resources for the month, with replenishment a ways off.  We enjoy working together and welcome newcomers, people of all ages, early and later (clean-up help is very welcome, from 1:30pm on).

A sign-up poster will appear in the foyer at church, suggesting these categories of groceries:  main dishes, all kinds, preferably with some protein and veg; salads (including those beloved by people without good teeth) and vegetables; hard-boiled eggs, sandwich bread and mayonnaise, because our folks adore egg-salad rolls or sandwiches made fresh; hand fruit (taken home, treasured: bananas, grapes, melon, apples, oranges); desserts, cookies or bars; milk, gallons and half-gallons, and fruit juice.  And donations of money to help cooks.  We aim to send food home with people, for other meals to come.  The need continues to grow, and this is something we can do.  To volunteer, or to ask about Soup Kitchen, call Cathy Baker or sign up at church when you’re there.

Segregated Gifts

Since 2005, we the congregation, at the First Universalist Church in Rockland have been giving one half of our Sunday cash offertory to a local organization and/or non-profit each month with the other half going to support our church's ministry. This may not be immediately apparent on Sunday mornings but it is a very important part of how we are choosing to reach out.  In addition to this financial contribution, we are raising awareness about important work being done in our local organizations by highlighting them in our weekly Sunday bulletin.

In addition, the church makes a donation to the City of Rockland to support the services we receive from the city, even though as a nonprofit organization we are not required to pay taxes.  This sends our positive message that we are supporting the city and the services it provides.

So that each organization receives an equal share of our giving, the offertory funds are collected through the year then divided equally in late December and sent to the various organizations chosen by our congregation and Board of Trustees.

We welcome you to come visit and participate to experience how it all works to support one of our UU goals of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all

Knox Interfaith Teen Safehaven

KITS (Knox Interfaith Teen Safehaven) began serving a warm evening meal to homeless teens on January 11, 2010.  We have been open from 5:30-7PM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  There are  2 trained staff to host the homeless teens and we serve the meal at our church.  We hope to use this time to connect the teens to community resources. The First Universalist Church,  St John’s Episcopal and the Rockland Congregational Church have provided all of the hot meals. if you are interested in helping please contact the church 594-8750  Thank you!
