Our Ministries: Our Community

Reverend Kate Braestrup, Affiliated Minister for Community Ministry

Reverend Kate Braestrup, newly ordained
Reverend Kate Braestrup,
speaking at her ordination service

A long-time, beloved member of this church, Kate completed her studies at Bangor Theological Seminary, spent a year as a part-time minister for a UU congregation in Pittsfield, Maine, and then became the Chaplain for the Maine State Warden Service. In May, 2005, in recognition of her theological training, ministerial experience, and pastoral work within the larger community, the Congregation bestowed upon her the title of "Reverend" and ordained her as an Affiliate Community Minister. While Kate continues her work with the Warden Service, our church proudly acts as her sponsoring congregation and welcomes her frequently to our pulpit.

Speaking at her ordination, Rev. Rolfe Gerhardt, retired minister of the church, said, "You have the delicate privilege of touching and holding the lives and souls of those who are dedicated to making the outdoors of our State a safe, responsible and enjoyable place for all of us...When there is tragedy and death, ...when something happens that darkens the soul of everyone around -- you will have to be there...as a genuine person who loves, laughs, cries, and helps heal the soul."

Following the Act of Ordination, Kate delivered the benediction. With characteristic tenderness and good humor, she addressed the law enforcement officers present. "I am tempted to pray for your safety...[but] If safety were YOUR top priority, you would doubtless have chosen another profession." The words were poignant, as Kate's husband, State Trooper Drew Griffith, died in an automobile accident while on duty in 1996. Following his death, Kate found her calling to law enforcement ministry. Rev. Braestrup's benediction continued, "May God grant you capable and amusing comrades, observant witnesses and gentle homecomings. May God grant you respite from what you must know of human evil, and refuge from what you must know of human pain. May God defend the goodness in your hearts. May God defend the sweetness in your souls. Amen."
